What are the advantages of copper cable over aluminum cable?

May 06, 2019

Following shared by the Cable Detection Equipment Supplier.

1. Low resistivity: the resistivity of aluminum cable is about 1.68 times higher than that of copper cable.

2. Good ductility: copper alloy has a ductility rate of 20-40%, copper for electrical purposes has a ductility rate of over 30%, while aluminum alloy only has a ductility rate of 18%.

3. High strength: the allowable stress of copper is 7~28% higher than that of aluminum at room temperature. In particular, the stress at high temperature, the difference between the two is very far.

4. Fatigue resistance: aluminum is easy to break after repeated bending, while copper is not easy. In terms of elastic index, copper is about 1.7~1.8 times higher than aluminum.

5. Good stability and corrosion resistance: copper core is oxidation resistant and corrosion resistant, while aluminum core is prone to oxidation and corrosion.

6. High carrying capacity: due to low resistivity, the carrying capacity (maximum current that can be passed through) of the same section of copper conductor cable is about 30% higher than that of aluminum conductor cable

7. Low voltage loss: due to the low resistivity of copper core cables, the same current flows through the same section. The voltage drop of copper core cable is small. The same transmission distance can guarantee higher voltage quality. Under the allowable voltage drop condition, the copper core cable transmission can reach a relatively long distance, that is, the power supply covers a large area, which is conducive to the network planning and reduces the number of power supply points.
